AS approached me for bass lessons and has recently tried the electric guitar.\u00a0 Recently he has passed his grade and felt ready to share his playing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u00a0have intended to learn the bass guitar since I was a teenager but never<\/span><\/p>\n

had the patience nor self-discipline to begin in any realistic sense. In
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

July 2014 I walked into an independent retail outlet and bought an amp,
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

lead and a crimson & black bass guitar, making a commitment to myself to
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

then finding a guitar teacher.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

I knew Gavin as a colleague at our mutual college and asked him to teach me<\/p>\n

the rudiments of playing the bass. Over the last 18 months I have acquired
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

much more than basic skills and knowledge. I was determined that my
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

learning should have a target which Gavin advised me would be the
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Preliminary Grade Exam<\/a><\/span>\u00a0which I subsequently passed with a Merit last
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

August. Furthermore, thanks to Gavin\u2019s experience, flexibility and sincere
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

encouragement, I have gained knowledge of scales, keys and arpeggios, basic
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

musical notation (on the instrument and written on the stave) and have
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

developed the ability to transfer these skills to the six-string electric
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

guitar and the keyboard.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

As such, I derive great pleasure not only from replicating and reproducing
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

familiar and famous musical themes across the three instruments but also
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

learning rhythmic timings and techniques, tablature reading and
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

interpretation as well as using my new confidence to play solo,
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

accompaniments and even discover great pieces and themes from legendary
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

music and musicians from\u00a0The Police<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Paul Simon<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0Led Zeppelin<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to the
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

late\u00a0David Bowie<\/a>.<\/strong>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

It is my intention to progress further and increase my \u201crepertoire\u201d as well
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

as to attempt the\u00a0Stage One examination<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on the bass guitar in July 2016.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

With Gavin\u2019s challenging and cheerful motivation, I have little doubt that
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

further accomplishments are forthcoming as will be my enjoyment in learning
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

and playing music for the first time in my life.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n
